Pruning & Trimming Done Right
Timing is most of the skill. Spring-flowering shrubs like forsythia, lilac, rhododendron and azalea are pruned right after they bloom so next year's buds are not cut off. Summer bloomers such as panicle hydrangea, rose of Sharon and spirea are pruned in late winter. Boxwood, yew, holly and privet hedges get a light shaping in early summer and a cleanup cut in late summer; arborvitae are tapered so the base stays full. We also know what not to touch: bigleaf hydrangeas that bloom on old wood are left alone except for deadwood.
Our crews use hand pruners, loppers and pruning saws for shrubs and small trees, and powered hedge trimmers only where a formal sheared look is wanted.
